Eleni Coffinas Secures $1.55 Million Settlement in Medical Malpractice Case
December 16, 2024 in Blog, Medical Malpractice
On August 24, 2024, SPBMCC attorney Eleni Coffinas successfully recovered $1.55 million on behalf of a 70-year-old plaintiff in a medical malpractice case involving the delayed diagnosis of breast cancer.
In December 2016, the plaintiff felt a lump in her breast and sought care from her primary care physician
who referred her for a mammogram and sonogram. Imaging was conducted at a medical facility and
interpreted as negative by the radiologist. However, no referral to a breast surgeon was made to investigate the cause of the lump.
About a year later, after the lump had grown, the plaintiff returned to her primary care physician. Further
investigation led to a breast cancer diagnosis. The plaintiff subsequently underwent bilateral mastectomies and reconstructive surgery. She did not require chemotherapy or radiation therapy.
SPBMCC Member Eleni Coffinas successfully argued that the plaintiff’s primary care physician should
have referred her to a breast surgeon earlier and that the radiologist failed to properly interpret the initial
mammogram and sonogram. While she remains cancer-free eight years later, a more timely diagnosis
could have provided the plaintiff with a better chance of long-term survival.
A settlement of $1.55 million was reached to compensate the plaintiff for the delayed diagnosis and its
impact on her health.
