SPBMCC Firm Member Eleni Coffinas Acquires $8 Million Settlement in Birth Injury Case

On June 24, 2024, Sullivan Papain attorney Eleni Coffinas obtained a $8 million settlement on behalf of
an infant plaintiff who sustained severe and permanent injuries due to medical negligence during birth.
In June, plaintiff presented to the defendant for the labor and delivery of an otherwise healthy infant. Despite persistent signs of fetal distress on the electronic fetal heart monitoring strips, the defendant’s medical facility failed to properly manage the labor and did not perform a cesarean section in a timely manner. This delay in delivery led to catastrophic injuries for the infant.
As a result of the defendants’ failure to act, the infant now suffers from spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy, hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, and a range of other serious medical conditions, including spasms and convulsions, cortical visual impairment, intestinal dysmotility, and dysphagia. The infant also experienced subluxation of the right hip, vocal cord paralysis, and bilateral Achilles dorsiflexion, among other complications. Several surgeries have been required to address the injuries to the infant’s hips and spine.
The plaintiff retained SPBMCC Firm Member Eleni Coffinas, who successfully settled the case for $8 million dollars to provide for the infant’s medical care and support. The case was settled in June.
