In the early hours of Wednesday, December 1st, an explosion occurred in the basement of a Brooklyn home. The explosion shot a large fireball into the street and sent debris flying, an event that was caught on video here.
FDNY Investigation of House Fire Discovers Faulty Boiler Caused the Explosion
The Brooklyn home that suffered the explosion was located on Vermont Street near Jamaica Avenue in Cypress Hills. Two of the home’s residents were in the house at the time of the explosion and both managed to escape. The explosion injured six people and forced dozens of others to leave their homes—54 people in total. Fortunately, there were no fatalities.
“There was an explosion out the front,” FDNY Deputy Chief Patrick Sheridan told reporters on scene. “The first floor collapsed into the cellar, so we were unable to get searches of the cellar and the first floor of the original fire building.”
Firefighters who arrived on the scene were met with fires in the cellar and the first two floors of the home and the blaze had spread to the homes that flanked each side of the building before responders on the scene were able to control the flames. In total, more than 33 units with 138 firefighters were called to the scene.
After investigation from authorities, the cause of the explosion was discovered to be a faulty boiler connected to a gas line. In a statement early Monday morning, December 6th, National Grid called this case an active investigation—ultimately, the event has left the structural stability of the entire block in question.
