Eleni Coffinas, Esq. Secures $9 Million Settlement for Medical Malpractice
A 33-year-old single mother of seven tragically passed away in August 2017, following complications during and after her twin pregnancy. The plaintiff was admitted to the hospital for prenatal visit, as she was at high risk for developing deep vein thrombosis (DVT) due to the twin pregnancy, being morbidly obese, and hypertension. Plaintiff received a standard prophylactic dose of heparin (a medicine given to prevent DVT), but the plaintiff’s attorney argued that the amount of heparin given to the plaintiff was not the proper dosage. Her family testified that the plaintiff did not walk while hospitalized and the hospital also has no record of the plaintiff ambulating (walking) – a critical factor in preventing DVT. Despite this, the plaintiff was discharged.
The plaintiff was readmitted to the hospital a few days later for a cesarean section delivery of her twins.
The day after plaintiff’s C-Section, she was visiting her twins in the NICU. After returning to her room, the plaintiff cried out for help as she was struggling to breathe. Despite resuscitative efforts, the plaintiff passed away from thromboembolism, twin gestation and morbid obesity. The family received a $9 million settlement for pain and suffering secured by Eleni Coffinas, Esq.
