SPBMCC Member Eleni Coffinas Recovers $1.6 Million in Wrongful Death Case
July 5, 2023 in Delayed Diagnosis, Medical Malpractice, Wrongful Death
On April 12, 2023, SPBMCC Member Eleni Coffinas successfully recovered $1.6 million for the family of a man who received improper aftercare following surgery and died.
60-Year-Old Man Receives Improper Aftercare and Dies Following Surgery
In 2019, a 60-year-old man presented to the defendant’s New York Presbyterian Allen Hospital with abdominal issues and was correctly diagnosed with having a small bowel obstruction that required surgery. Following the surgery, the patient was not recovering as he should have been, and five days later, a CT scan showed that a small bowel obstruction remained. The defendants consistently documented a non-treatable ileus, a non-mechanical decrease or stoppage of the flow of intestinal contents. However, the blockage was a small bowel obstruction, which can and should be treated surgically.
Lack of Surgical Intervention Leads to Death
Due to the delay in treatment, the patient had a bowel perforation, became septic, and died at the age of 60, even though timely surgery would have saved his life.
Eleni Coffinas Represents the Plaintiff’s Family
As a result of her delayed diagnosis, the plaintiff’s wife sought representation at SPBMCC, where Eleni Coffinas was the trial attorney. Coffinas settled the case for $1.6 million in Bronx Supreme Court to compensate for the delayed diagnosis that led to the patient’s wrongful death.
